While this blog is mostly about discovering companies that give back, it’s also about companies that are doing good. Part of sustainable living is finding seconds acts for items we would typically throw away, also known as upcycling. Upcycled products can take on many forms, but my favorite are the ones that take very mundane items and transform them into something elevated. The perfect example of this magical upcycled transformation is Rothy’s Shoes.
As my last pair of flats finally met its demise after months of nonstop use, I was in search of a new pair. I came across Rothy’s because I kept seeing ads for it on my Facebook page, which I usually ignore. Apparently, Facebook knew I was looking for shoes. Yes, you are a creepy stalker, Facebook… but I guess you won this time. Then I saw some photos of Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, wearing Rothy’s flats at some event. No shame, I think she’s awesome, and now I was intrigued by the shoes.
Rothy’s shoes are made from recycled plastic water bottles. Whhaaaattt? After my whole come-to-Jesus moment with plastic, I just had to check them out. A comfy and stylish pair of flats that are upcycled from recycled plastic bottles? This might be too good to be true.
I must say, they did not disappoint. I bought The Flat in Charcoal Birdseye with the bubblegum pink soles. They are incredibly well constructed, comfortable shoes and I’m amazed at how they turned plastic bottles into these shoes. In addition, they use recycled foam, nontoxic vegan adhesives, and carbon-free rubber soles. I love the shoes and I love how Rothy’s are so thoughtfully sustainable. They even thought about reducing shipping and packaging waste by using the shoe box as the shipping box, which was also made of recycled materials.
Some may say that Rothy’s are overpriced. Starting at $125, they are certainly not cheap. However, I would argue that you pay more for quality construction that will last you several years. For myself, I know these flats will get serious use and have already become a staple in my wardrobe. Plus, I love telling people I’m wearing recycled plastic water bottles on my feet!
