Over 800 million people around the world suffer from hunger. We often think that hunger only exists in underdeveloped countries. Remember those commercials with the starving kids in Africa? And what child of the 80s could forget “We are the World”? While the vast majority of people suffering from hunger do live in Africa and Asia, would it surprise you to know that 37 million people in the US suffer from hunger and food insecurity? And 11 million of them are children.
I’m learning that hunger isn’t just the homeless person scrounging through trash cans. In many cases, hunger is hidden and invisible. The working poor suffer greatly because they often make too much to qualify for government assistance, but don’t earn enough to feed their families. For many school-aged kids, a free lunch they receive at school is the only meal they will get that day. Hunger is a very real, yet hidden problem here in the US. Globally, the situation is far more dire.
There are many amazing hunger relief organizations that need support. But, did you know there are also social impact brands that are fighting hunger one checkout at a time?
